A couple Saturdays ago, Leah walked onto the mobile unit needing an appointment as soon as possible. Thankfully, we had an open slot and I was able to get her in immediately. From the moment I first saw her face, I knew she was distraught and anxious for help.

Leah began to share her story. She was in an abusive relationship with her husband and in the process of trying to finalize a divorce. In the midst of this chaos, she found out some news that rocked her world: she was pregnant. Her mind already made up, she came to our mobile unit to find out how far along she was. Her hope was that she was under 20 weeks so that she could get an abortion. (In North Carolina, abortions are only legal up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.)

We were able to talk through her options with her and inform her of the best possible decision she could make. Based on Leah’s dates, I knew she would probably be close to 20 weeks. My heart sank, knowing this child could hear, do flips, kick, and suck its thumb, but could still be aborted.

Leah agreed to receive an ultrasound, and within the first second of placing the ultrasound probe on her abdomen, it was so evident there was a baby inside of her. The first thing we were able to see was a face with a hand and fingers being sucked on. Leah was astonished at what she saw and couldn’t believe this human being was inside of her. We saw the baby do flips, kick, and cross its legs.

In that moment, Leah knew she couldn’t go through with any abortion, no matter how far along in the pregnancy she was. We measured her baby at 18.5 weeks pregnant. I was able to give her pictures, a baby hat, and a baby blanket. Leah was in awe of this life that was forming inside of her and I was so appreciative that I could share this moment with her.

I took time to pray with her and provided her with information about local OBGYNs where she could begin receiving prenatal care. We were able to connect her with our Pregnancy and Parenting Class, and I referred her to some local counseling centers in the area due to the trauma she had endured with her abusive husband.

I am not telling you this story to make you believe that every client we see chooses life after meeting with us. It is actually devastating the amount of women we do not get to see choose life. But it’s stories like Leah’s that encourage me and let me know that I am not the one doing the work, God is. It’s in these moments I have to trust God and thank Him for the opportunity to speak to these women about who He is and encourage them wherever they are in their lives.

My prayer is that we do see hearts changed and lives saved, but knowing that God is sovereign gives me peace and understanding, and it motivates me to continue helping women and men face their unplanned pregnancy without fear.

Becca Olivo is one of our staff nurses. In her spare time, she loves hanging out with her awesome husband, Rudy, and serves faithfully at her local church, Mercy Hill.
