Every once in awhile, we have a very successful and healthy client who allows us to share her story with the public in order to encourage other women who face similar circumstances that she faced. Kari (pronounced Kär-ee) is a former client who gave us permission to share her story. We’ll actually be sharing a video of her story this fall, so be on the lookout for that.

As the Client Services Director, my day-to-day is often spent overseeing and training the volunteers and staff who serve and interact with our clients every day. I love what I do and am passionate about putting our clients first and loving them well.

However, because of the large number of clients we see each week, sometimes it’s nearly impossible for me to personally connect with each client. So, when I get to tell stories like Kari’s and be personally involved, my heart is overjoyed and my eyes filled with tears (embarrassing, but true).

One day last fall, Kari decided to take a home pregnancy test. And to her disbelief, she got a positive result. She came to GPCC with a couple of friends to get a verification of her result and learn about her choices. Kari expressed to her advocate, Haley, that she was going through a difficult time and this pregnancy was not going to make it any easier.

After getting a confirmation test with a positive result at GPCC, her friends and Haley talked with Kari. They offered her support, encouragement, and truth. Overwhelmed by her new reality, Kari was still undecided about her plan for the pregnancy.

Kari also received an ultrasound while she was with us. Unfortunately, she was too early in her pregnancy to get a conclusive result, so the sonographer scheduled her to come back in 2-3 weeks for a repeat scan. During that time, Kari scheduled an abortion appointment for herself.

But thankfully, Kari still decided to come back to GPCC for her second scan. After seeing the ultrasound, she changed her mind and knew she couldn’t go through with it. Kari called and cancelled her abortion appointment. We were so glad she decided to choose life for her baby!

Haley, Kari’s peer advocate, followed up with her frequently in the following weeks. During Kari’s initial appointment, Haley had shared the gospel with her and invited her to come to church. Kari never took Haley up on the offer, but Haley kept asking, almost every week. Just when she decided to stop, Kari showed up one Sunday. Since then, she’s been a regular attender and has really started to grasp what Jesus has done for her and how He changes everything. Kari even got plugged into a community group where she now finds regular community and support.

This is where I come into the story. I had seen her file cross my desk, but it wasn’t until I was talking to my community group about GPCC’s Walk for Life event that I met Kari face to face. She spoke up and said it was because of the Care Center that she was still pregnant.

Ever since, I’ve had the immense privilege of seeing Kari every week at church. I’ve gotten to watch firsthand God’s faithfulness in Kari’s life and I’m honored to call her a friend.

Just a few weeks ago someone in the group took the initiative to throw her a baby shower. We were so excited to celebrate with her, generously give her gifts, and pray for her and her growing family. We cannot wait to meet this baby!

I am so proud of Kari and her strength throughout this whole process. It is unbelievably rewarding to work for an organization like Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center. To see a client walk through our Success Sequence and watch it lead to optimal health outcomes is invaluable.

At GPCC, we hope to meet and empower women just like Kari every day. We believe there’s a story behind every woman’s desire to have an abortion and we want to be there to listen to her and empower her to choose life for the next chapter.

Deanna Jewell is our faithful Client Services Director. When she’s not at the center, she’s hanging out with her twelve nieces and nephews, or serving at her local church, Mercy Hill.
