The Walk for Life is only two months away, and our walk teams have hit the ground running with some great progress so far! If you’re considering joining a walk team, or even leading one, we’d love to help you get started! You can check out the details on our walk webpage by clicking here.

One of the most helpful ways to learn and get motivated for the Walk is by hearing from others who already have experience with it. So this week, we’re excited to feature two team leaders who are already off to a great start. Check out some of their ideas for putting together a dynamite team and begin making plans for your team today!

Meet the leaders for the Mt. Pisgah UMC team:
Amy Leebrick & Stacy Helt

How long have you been involved with the Walk for Life events, and how did you first get connected to GPCC?
Amy: This is my first year being involved in the Walk for Life event. At any point in my life, if you’d asked me about Walk Team Leadersabortion, I would have told you that I was pro-life. But a couple years ago, I began to see how useless my beliefs were because I wasn’t DOING anything about them. I considered the idea of getting involved with the protests and politics that surround abortion, but I didn’t feel right about all that. Then one Sunday Stacy Helt got up at our church and told about GPCC. Instantly, I felt drawn to get involved. I finally saw through the mess of politics to understand that the way to make a difference is by showing love and compassion to women and couples. And that’s why I’m so excited to be involved with GPCC and the Walk for Life.

Stacy: This will be my third Walk for Life event. I have served as a peer advocate and class facilitator at GPCC for about three years. I was only a walker the first year that I volunteered. I invited my mom and sister to come and see where I had been volunteering and to walk with me.  Last year, I was a team leader for Mount Pisgah, but my family was in the middle of planning my daughter’s wedding, so our team wasn’t very big because I wasn’t able to put much planning or advertising into it. This year, Amy was able to come on board, and two heads are definitely better than one. She has done a great job bringing new enthusiasm and ideas to the team.

What motivates you to organize and lead a team for this event?
Amy: I always end up with a lump in my throat when I watch the client stories. My motivation comes from seeing that there’s such a need for unplanned pregnancy support and knowing that GPCC is reaching out to meet that need. But I know they can’t do it alone. So, I’m leading a team to raise awareness of GPCC’s outreach and to help bring in financial support.

What are you most looking forward to about the day of the walk?
Amy: The fellowship with other people who are invested in helping our community.

What are some of your team’s strategies for raising funds?
Here are just a few!

  1. Getting as many walkers as possible! Every walker you add has the possibility of bringing in more money and more walkers.
  2. We are considering having a team bake sale.
  3. A member of our team had her kids make artwork magnets, and she has set up donation baskets in several stores. The baskets have pictures of her kids who made the magnets, a description of GPCC, and the magnets are free with a donation. We aren’t sure how successful these baskets will be, but I thought it was a great idea.
  4. Stacy and I made a video telling about the Walk and explaining GPCC’s mission and services. We are going to show it to our church next week. Hopefully that will bring in more walkers and funds.
  5. Encouraging others to give by cutting back on a few indulgences. Recently after a long week, I was going to treat myself to a mani / pedi. But then I decided to do my own nails at home and donate the money saved to GPCC. It doesn’t have to be a lot. But a mani / pedi here and a Starbucks coffee there can really add up.

What are some simple ways to get your team excited about this event and really invested in its mission?
We’ve created a closed Facebook group just for the registered walkers. We share information, generate ideas, and celebrate progress.

We also have a group chat with just with my mom and sisters. We get a lot of excitement and momentum from this chat. Our conversations are full of competition, joking, and challenging, but it’s a lot of fun and it does help us stay focused and on track.

What would you say to someone who wants to be involved with this event, but is nervous about asking people for money?
We would tell them to start with someone they feel comfortable with. Begin by asking that person if he/she is interested in coming to the Walk. A lot of times, a person may decline but then say, “But I’m interested in making a donation.” That way you haven’t even had to ask for money.

Time to Get Started!

We are so grateful for our team leaders and proud of their hard work so far! If you have any additional questions about how to grow your team and reach your fundraising goals, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’d love to work with you as we seek to empower women and men to face their pregnancies without fear in Greensboro!
